We have given up on the daily newspapers in true paper form quite a while ago. Now we read online versions, and we are getting better to adopt the screening, leafing through and browsing approach to the new media – mostly via scrolling combined with headline reading. So, it came as a surprise to us then that in coffee shops in Austria – both in Salzburg and in Innsbruck we noted newspaper stands or newspaper shelves. They have current, here daily, newspapers available to their customers. These papers are equipped with a wooden back rail that serves as hanger and extends the lifetime of the paper. One initial thought could have been to assume that this is nostalgia and supports the general flair and decoration of the establishment – but upon further observation we saw quite a few people reading these papers. Monitoring the stand and shelf it was apparent that there was real “paper traffic” during our stays in these coffee shops. I will refrain from classifying the people reading the papers – here as to them being locals and regulars vs. tourists like us that cater to their curiosity and pick up those papers more casually. We were not in the mood and did not have the time for extended stays and reading over coffee, but it was fun to see one place where the printed media is alive and well.
