The hotel where we were staying on the beach is a nicely maintained property with many amenities including extensive flower beds and shrubbery beds and large areas of nicely manicured lawns. One morning I went out for a walk and there it was: literally in the middle if not dead center of a lawn perhaps thirty by one hundred square feet was a fresh pile of dirt – pushed up by a mole. (I am an expert now after my hunting adventures in our yard!). One would conclude that this rather prominent placement was achieved with foresight if not measurement! This pile was visible from all directions and could not be overlooked even if one tried. By my judgement it was probably 16 inches in diameter and about 10 inches tall. The first reaction the gardener would have, I think, could be: how dare you to destroy our grounds in such a deliberate manner – almost rubbing it in. I had to chuckle – not really a reaction meant to console the gardener! But then I wondered – wait – the mole is almost blind. It spends pretty much all its time underground, and it feeds on what it finds there. It certainly could not care less about the appearance of the lawn above – perhaps just to the extent that a good-looking lawn may have tasty roots and nourishes grubs that the mole is keen on eating.
So no, it did not mean to offend anybody – it was just cleaning house.
(Note – my newly found rationality comes after being “offended” many times by both moles and gophers in our own yard – even though never with such perfect placement!)
